From the enormous group of works by Nobuyoshi Araki, we narrowed down to the theme of his wife "Yoko", and mainly composed works with Yoko himself as the subject, works with a deep relationship with Yoko, and works whose existence can be deeply felt even after death... Consider "private photography," which is the essence of Araki's photography.

Araki himself said that he became a photographer by Yoko, and the works created from his wife, Yoko, from the encounter in the 1960s to his death in 1990, pierced the core of photography. I can't help but shake the hearts of the viewers.

Exhibited works: The latest works taken from the early 1960s to the exhibition. (The exhibition title "Sentimental Journey" is the title of a privately-owned photobook published in 1971, and symbolizes the photography life of Nobuyoshi Araki, which continues from the present to the future.)

A magnificent scale exhibition with a total of more than 1000 items, including the latest work produced by Araki, who turns 77 this year (Kiju), and a scrapbook produced in the 1960s, which can be said to be the origin.

The title, "Shokan Elderly Man A," represents Araki himself, likened to Hokusai Katsushika, who continued to produce energetically throughout his life, in his mid-70s when he called him "Shokan Elderly Man."

Time for flowers that gradually wither from the heyday of gorgeous blooming, time for dolls and figures that change their appearance while being remodeled and painted by Mr. Araki, time for natural light, time for balconies. When they melt into Araki's "I" time, which takes pictures like breathing, and flow into the tremors of time captured by the shutter, the romance and personal nostalgia of the magnificent time crystallizes.

"In the finder, it's my'amusement park'."

When Mr. Araki's crush toward the photograph radiates energy and vitality and forms the "story" of each viewer, the photograph will fly to a further unknown time.

It's an era of old people, so nowadays, people who resist aging like "I don't want to be seen by old people" are not good. Now is the time to announce the change of "aging" with confidence. There are many things I don't know if I have to get older, and since I've had a career as a human being, it's natural that old people are more attractive than young people (laughs).

"Shakan Elderly A" Araki @ ISETAN Late Elderly Book

Date: April 5-11, 2017
at: Isetan Shinjuku Main Building 5F = Art Gallery

Araki's calligraphy has a history of several decades, and his obsession with words can be seen everywhere from the beginning of his activities, coupled with his deep knowledge of literature. The text written on the left hand at the beginning of "Sentimental Journey", which established the idea of photography as a private photograph, the title letters of numerous works, and the snacks I used to go to in the past were always prepared with ink, brush, and paper. At the request, I wrote a book in an old temple in Kyoto.
Self-taught, don't worry about tools, take a brush and soak it in ink when you feel like it.
It is a free and open Araki style.
Needless to say, the mainstream is a photographer. However, his book is full of charm that can be called a sidestream.
This book is a quick rewrite of Araki's own words.
It was the first opportunity to be exhibited in one place.
Araki takes pictures as if he were breathing. Araki himself is also the book that accompanies the photograph that is his life itself.

Nobuyoshi Araki Exhibition "Indecent Spring"

Date:2017年3月3日~6月6日
at:art space AM

The final edition of the three exhibitions held in summer (indecent summer), winter (indecent winter), and autumn (indecent autumn).
In contrast to the black-and-white photographs of the Inshu exhibition, which were printed on Japanese paper and the Heart Sutra was written with a brush, in the Inuharu exhibition, the works shot on color film are vividly displayed in the finder. Introducing a group of gorgeous works that depict the paradise inside and make a book of open-minded words.
"Hana Yuen" is a "Hana Yuen" created by dolls and figures of various origins, which are arranged and photographed by Mr. Araki's fingers, and are entwined with the decaying flowers that swallow time in a short life.
The fascinating field where Mizumu and Nightmares intersect tickles the writer's desire to write, and humorous and bizarre words are entrusted to unique characters and blend beautifully with photographs.
In the Gagô of "Heart Sutra", if the works that look at life from the edge of death are shaded, the outline is clarified by the existence of death, which is scattered from the works of this "Yuharu" exhibition. The more brilliant, raw sensation may be likened to the sun.
Mr. Araki, who is welcoming Kiju in May, has released his desire for creative work, and all the shutter sounds are producing works one after another.
In the photographic world embodied by Mr. Araki, who says that things have been constantly trembling over time and that copying those tremors is a photographic act, the past, present, and future resonate. The shimmering, nostalgic feeling that you can't go anywhere turns the landscape into a scene.

Nobuyoshi Araki Exhibition "Last by Leica"

Date: January 11 - February 22, 2017
at: art space AM

In 1913, the history of Leica begins with Ul Leica, the prototype of the 35mm camera designed by German engineer Oskar Barnack (1879-1936).
Araki first acquired Leica, which has been loved by many photographers for a century, in 1991.
Director Yasujiro Ozu, who cast Kasa in an important role and left behind numerous movie works when shooting the beloved actor Chishu Ryuchi (Shu Ryuchi 1904-1993), who was called "the grandfather of Japan".
1903-1963) bought Leica in Ginza to pay homage to Kas by using Leica, which he loved and always carried with him.
The body at that time was the M6, which is said to have gained top-class popularity in the Leica M series.
The last film camera M7 in the M series, which was later presented by the Leica headquarters with the name Nobuyoshi Araki, has joined the machine.
All of Araki's huge contact sheets, which say "I take pictures of me with a camera," are numbered, and the film taken with Leica has the letter "L" indicating Leica.
Has been done.
"Last by Leica" is a tribute to the film that has narrowed the market due to the rise of digital cameras. Following "Life by Leica" and "Love by Leica", the latest work by Leica camera. Consists of.
At the same time, unpublished works by instant film (IMPOSSIBLE Black & Red Duochrome 600) are displayed in a large frame.

Nobuyoshi Araki "Desk Paradise"

Date: September 15-October 29, 2016 PARIS
at:Taka Ishii Gallery Photography Paris

Heaven, as I always say, can't be heaven without hell in heaven.
Nobuyoshi Araki

"Paradise" is one of the important motifs of Araki. After the death of his wife Yoko, the balcony of his house was likened to an abandoned paradise, and the objects were lined up in "Ano Paradise" (1998). "Paradise" (2011), "It Was Once a Paradise" (2012) composed of female nudes and objects, "Paradise is Monochrome" (2015), which is a photograph of dolls and dying flowers. Announced as "Paradise" series. The new work "Desk Paradise" introduced in this exhibition is 23 color works using 6 x 7 positive film. Araki, who says that it is the current mood to shoot something that you like in a real way, not a story, takes a private object as well as the act of continuously shooting the changing sky and scenes. The "desktop paradise" taken like a diary may be a perfect canvas to reflect his own image that is waning and booming.

Nobuyoshi Araki "Indecent Autumn-Heart Sutra"

Date: September 9 - November 11, 2016 TOKYO
at: Art space AM

Sensitive to classics such as "Shoshoshu", "Manyoshu", and "Songs to Make the Dust" and works by ancestors such as Kafu Nagai, Santoka Taneda, and Hokusai, he has created numerous masterpieces by superimposing his own "now" feelings.
This work, which has produced "Kai" (2014) "Half-summer", is constructed by precise manual work with 15 powerful points that are made by writing "Heart Sutra" on the photographs printed on Japanese paper.
Following "Sex" (2015), a group of collage works made by cutting and joining instant film works.
Araki's work is always filled with a strong thirst for creation that constantly pursues new frontiers in a beautiful and innovative expression.
This work also has the scent of death (or because of it), but it is full of vitality for life.

Nobuyoshi Araki Exhibition "Shakan Elderly A 76 years old"

at: Taka Ishii Gallery Photography / Film

Nobuyoshi Araki: Photo of A Mad Old Man 76th Birthday
Dates: May 25 – Jun 29, 2016
Location: Taka Ishii Gallery Photography / Film

This exhibition features nine color works from the "Shakan Elderly A 76-year-old" series, and the latest work "Tombeau Tokyo", which has been exhibited at a large-scale solo exhibition held at the Guimet Oriental Museum (Paris) in France since April. It consists of 471 monochrome works, for a total of 480 works.

"Everything in the picture is the afterlife. That world is a paradise. If you look at the camera, it's a paradise everywhere, now." Nobuyoshi Araki

Araki takes a picture on the birthday of dancer KaoRi, who has been collaborating for more than 10 years since around 2002.
The latest work taken at her birthday party in 2016 is Araki's birth 76 years old! It was shot on 6x7 positive film.
"Tombeau Tokyo" is a monochrome work taken for a solo exhibition at the Guimet Oriental Museum.
"Tombeau" is a tombstone in French. Araki says that when he passed around the Aoyama Cemetery on a shooting line from the train window (Kurumado), a huge skyscraper standing beyond the graveyard looked like a line of gravestones.
Araki's eyes have been staring at this city for a long time, saying, "I only feel like taking pictures of Tokyo."
It may have shown two expressions: it is an inorganic substance and at the same time it is an organism that is incorporated into people's daily lives and operates 24 hours a day and pulsates.

This exhibition features nine color works from the "Photo of A Mad Old Man 76th Birthday" series and 471 black and white works from his latest series "Tombeau Tokyo," also included in his large-scale solo exhibition shown at the Musée Guimet in Paris since April this year.
Araki photographs the dancer KaoRi using positive color film annually on her birthday. He has collaborated with KaoRi since 2002 and has photographed her for over 10 years. The nine works included in this exhibition are the latest from this birthday series. He shot the images using 6 x 7 positive film to commemorate the 76th year of his life.
"Tombeau Tokyo" is a black and white series, which Araki shot for his solo exhibition at the Musée Guimet. Araki has explained that when he was shooting Aoyama Cemetery from inside a car, the high rise buildings in the distance behind the gravestones began to look like giant grave markers, rendering the entire city a graveyard.

Date: May 25 - June 21, 2014
at: Taka Ishii Gallery (Kiyosumi, Tokyo)

We will exhibit 65 works selected from the latest newly shot works. The title "Left Eye No Koi" is a photo book "Love on the left bank" published by Ed van der Elsken in 1954.
The title of the Left Bank, 1954). Araki saw a photo book of "Love on the Left Bank of Seine" at the age of 20 and made a woman take the same pose. It's also a tribute to Araki's Elsken.
Araki, who lost sight of his right eye due to central arterial occlusion of the right eye in October last year, continued to take photographs from the end of last year to this year at the same vigorous pace as before.
Hundreds of images In this series composed of, the right part of the positive film taken is painted with black magic, and the photograph is printed from that positive.
The photograph directly projects the vision of the left eye and the right eye, and the right part is the retina. It represents a certain view.
Even in the face of the fact that you get over prostate cancer and then lose sight of your right eye, "Death is coming here.
I don't want to go from here. I'm coming. I have to blow it away." As the word "(laughs)" says, this series, which reflects Araki's current energetically shooting, can be said to be a declaration of a photographer who regards "photograph = life".
Please take this opportunity to see the latest work. In addition, we will publish a collection of works in conjunction with the exhibition.

Nobuyoshi Araki "Love on the Left Eye"
Dates: May 25 – Jun 21, 2014
Location: Taka Ishii Gallery (Kiyosumi, Tokyo)
Since October of last year, Araki has been largely unable to see out of his right eye due to a retinal artery obstruction. Still, he has continued to shoot with unchanged vigor: in total, this series consists of hundreds of images. Araki shot the photographs that make up "Love on the Left Eye" on slide film, and, before making any prints, he filled up the right side of the film with a black magic marker. The printed photographs, then, reflect Araki’s vision—the left side of each image is clear, but the right side is clouded.
Araki recently recovered from prostate cancer, and he is now facing up to the reality of losing vision in one of his eyes. "Death comes towards us all, you know," he says. "I don’t want to approach it myself, but there’s no getting around the fact that it’s coming. You just have to laugh it off!" These words show Araki’s energetic approach to his work, and this series—which reflects the Araki of today—could indeed be seen as a declaration that "photography is life."

Nobuyoshi Araki "Married Woman Eros", known as the life work of "Married Woman Eros", was started in 1998 as a serialization project of "Weekly Mass" (Futabasha).
The photographs will be seen for the first time. Also, this is the first opportunity for an exhibition consisting only of photographs of "married women".

Approximately 700 cabinet-sized photographs developed in a grid pattern on the wall are taken with a 35 mm format camera, and the intimate relationship with the married woman who is the subject is more clearly shown in each photograph. Painting is done by Araki himself with 7 color markers. In addition, we will also introduce about 20 new prints taken with a medium format camera.

As Araki says, "They (married women) themselves are art", each woman is fully drawn out in the "shooting / shooting" relationship.

Along with this exhibition, a photo book "Married Woman Photographs" will be published.

Each black and white cabinet size print to be displayed on the walls of the gallery in a grid format, have all been taken with a 35mm camera. In addition, the photographs have been painted by Araki himself with color markers, creating a completely new body of work. The exhibition will also feature roughly 20 large format of recent black and white hitozuma works.

"They (the wives) themselves are a work of art," Araki explains.

Date: May 25th (Sat) – June 22nd (Sat) May 25 – Jun 22, 2013
at: Taka Ishii Gallery (Kiyosumi, Tokyo) Taka Ishii Gallery (Kiyosumi, Tokyo)

In this exhibition, which is the 20th solo exhibition at Taka Ishii Gallery, Araki will present 50 new works selected on the premise that they are erotic and real.

Isn't magazine gravure interesting? Especially since it became digital. There is no eroticism. It has to be real, not atmosphere or concept. It's real, not realism. It's erotic. You should do it.
It's erotic before you take it off and before you tie it up. Just sitting at the hotel and before you have a relationship. I call it "erotic presence".

Nobuyoshi Araki "EroReal"

"EroReal" will be Araki’s 20th solo exhibition at Taka Ishii Gallery and it will include 50 works, which Araki selected based on the criteria of eroticism and reality.

Magazine pin-ups aren’t interesting, are they? Especially now that they’re shot digitally, they lack eroticism. It’s not about an ambiance or concept; it’s about being real. Not realism, but real―ero-real. I have to say it straight.
There’s eroticism in the moments before undress and before being tied up.
An image of a person just sitting in a hotel room can have what I call "erotic presence" because it anticipates the sexual relation that’s going to follow. Trust me, this is what today’s erotic photography needs.

Continues to be unparalleled internationally as a representative photographer in Japan Nobuyoshi Araki Introducing various print works created with his instant film works as a motif.
An angel's whisper and a devil's ear whispering from a photograph filled with fresh sensuality and clear silence, where life (Eros) and death (Thanatos) intersect.
We will create various stories while encountering and fluctuating with the eyes and memories of

[About the exhibited works]
Aluminum plate and Japanese paper are used for the print media, and the original black leather iron is used for the framing. The image of the folding screen and hanging scroll is added, and each unique texture is combined to create a unique specification.

Nobuyoshi Araki KaoRi by 20x24 INSTANT FILM

"I'm not shooting space, I'm shooting time. I'm framing time."
When heading to any subject, the energy of the whole body is poured.
Life itself is assimilated with photography, and works are born in a pulsing manner.

Compact camera. 35mm SLR. 6x7 ... Open and close the viewfinders of various cameras so that the eyes blink. One of them is an instant film camera.

The Polaroid camera is one of Araki's favorite machines.
After Polaroid withdrew from film production, there were volunteers who took over machines and craftsmen and tried to keep analog instant film alive.
The camera was loaded with development functions such as temperature and humidity. This is a new instant film by IMPOSSIBLE, which fluctuates and changes with the environment of.
When Polaroid was producing 20x24 inch instant film, it was mainly intended for use in medical and construction sites due to its precise reproducibility and speedy development capability.
And now, instant films of the same size have emerged with completely different properties.

At the end of 2011, the world's largest 20x24 inch Polaroid vintage instant camera, weighing 200KG, landed in Japan.
Multiple craftsmen must be present to shoot.
To focus. To measure the proper amount of developer flowing on the film by ear. Photographers are forced to collaborate with them in a tense manner.
Wait until the image appears. Dozens of minutes.
The film keeps changing until the developer dries (sometimes even months).
A photo opportunity in anticipation of the final shape.

The model is KaoRi, Araki's muse for many years.
For monochrome photography, the neat appearance that appeared in a white blouse and black skirt, one by one, wears a mysterious luster and transparent beauty as each costume is taken off.

The works that were produced at the shooting site such as the battlefield became established on the film after several months.
These works, which are filled with small accidents and inevitability and entwined with the passage of time, should be called miracles.

Nobuyoshi Araki "Past / Future Photo Mad Old Man Diary 1979-2040"

May 25th (Fri) -June 23rd (Sat), 2012
Taka Ishii Gallery (Kiyosumi, Tokyo)

Nobuyoshi Araki "Past tense – Future, 1979 - 2040" Dates: May 25 – June 23, 2012
Location: Taka Ishii Gallery (Kiyosumi, Tokyo) Opening reception: Friday, May 25, 17:00 - 19:00

Using the date display function printed at the bottom of the photo, about 6,000 works that manipulated the time axis from 1979 to 2040, when Araki turns 100, were announced in a diary format in chronological order.

The photo is a diary ..... The photo is just one day's thing.
The thing that makes you feel like that, and the one day's thing is dragged by Hijo in the past. It's coming, and the future will continue forever. There are two feelings in just one day. I really want to set the date clearly ... I'm sorry, so I'm shooting the future now...

February 10, 2012 Nobuyoshi Araki

Photographs are diary entries… That’s all they can be. Photographs are just documentations of a day’s event. At the same time, they drag the past into the present and also continue into the future. A day’s occurrence evokes both the past and the future. That’s why I want to clearly date my pictures. It’s actually frustrating, that’s why I now photograph the future…

Photographs are, well, I'm convinced that life is nostalgia.
I met this kind of scene. In the current digital age, this kind of stick in the middle of the city, I'm chasing a crayfish or a carp with a stick. I was convinced that it was important. The old man (laughs).
March 2011 Keisuke Araki

Photography, well, not so much photography but life itself, is nostalgia. I realized, having seen these moments: in this day and age of digital media,in the center of Tokyo you see these sticks, right, they take these sticks and chase around crayfish and carp. Boyhood memories and stuff, that sort of nostalgia is the most important thing in life, the old man has realized(laughs).

I'm doing everything with a sense of 0 (spirit).
In the sky I felt like drawing something and creating "another my sky"

Either one is heavier. Then, the other one will be heavier.
When the premonition of death comes, the desire for life will come out, the desire for life.
